Captioning

Captioning is the process of converting the audio content of a television broadcast, webcast, film, video, CD-ROM, DVD, live event, or other productions into text and displaying the text on a monitor, or other visual display system for viewers. Captions not only display words as the textual equivalent of spoken dialogue or narration, but also include sound effects, and music description. It is important that the captions are (1) synchronized and appear at approximately the same time as the audio is delivered; (2) equivalent and equal in content to that of the audio. Captions are commonly produced in advance for pre-recorded material.

Captioning options are: OPEN Captions burned into the video so they are always “ON.” CLOSED Captions to be turned ON/OFF by the end user. REALTIME Captions produced live for broadcasts, meetings, and events.

Subtitling

Subtitles are a translation of your video’s spoken word and provide an accessible way for speakers of any language to watch your video. Subtitles typically do not include sound effects and are text translations or transcriptions of the “spoken dialogue” to provide the “hearing viewer” with the translation of their native language. For example, with subtitles, you can watch an English spoken video but follow along with subtitles in another language like Spanish, French, German, Chinese, or other target language. When you add subtitles to your video you can reach a global audience and create more accessible video content regardless of language or geographic differences.

Live Captioning

Live captions, are captions that are displayed in real-time as someone speaks. They are used to make live events and presentations accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing in real-time. This includes conferences, webinars, live streams, and other events. Live captions can also be useful for non-native speakers who may have difficulty understanding spoken language in real-time, as well as for people who are in a noisy environment. CaptionLink’s “real-time” caption writers are highly trained specifically to meet caption standards, certified, and have thousands of hours of live broadcast experience.
